I choose to study International Business as I believed it would equip me with the right set of skills and a well rounded knowledge to succeed in today's vibrant and multicultural business environment. Business is a live and dynamic subject, full of unexpected twists and surprises - I have always been fascinating by it and decided to pursue a career in this field. I chose Plymouth because it was one of the few universities which offered a sandwich course at that time. I hardly had any work experience in the industry and knew that a placement year would be an invaluable benefit to my future career prospects, and I was right.
I was born and brought up in south west of Poland, where I completed my primary and secondary education. Before coming to the UK, I studied English at the University of Wroclaw and trained to become an English teacher. Having completed the first year of my studies in Poland I wanted to experience how education systems work abroad and gain independence from my parents - which brought me to the UK. I have always had a great interest in languages and was an English - Polish translator before coming to Plymouth.
All the lecturers on the programme were very approachable and always willing to help despite their busy schedule. In addition, we had numerous tutorials, surgeries and drop in sessions which were extremely useful in answering all the queries we had and helping with difficulties we came across. In terms of personal development, different workshops were organised to help with revision techniques, academic writing, etc. These were invaluable in our first year! The quality of teaching is excellent. All the lecturers had good expertise in their specific subject area and were always able to draw on knowledge and examples beyond our academic syllabus. We were always encouraged to keep up to date with current issues in the business world, relate these to textbook theories and observe how business environment has changed over years. I did not only gain a well rounded knowledge of different aspects of business but also develop a range of people skills I can now call upon in my career. The facilities at Plymouth were exceptional! Various visual aids and much technology were used in accordance with lecture slides which made the whole study experience much more interesting and aided to memorise course material. Different IT facilities allowed to work and access e-resources off campus without the need to spend lengthy hours in the library, module announcements were communicated within seconds. During my 4 years at UoP, I witnessed it being transformed into a very modern and IT advanced institution, loads of money has been invested into various development initiatives. It was difficult at times - aiming to achieve high grades requires extra work and commitments which not all people are prepared for and do not always understand where you coming from. I have tried to give my 100% to uni work in my final year which did place strains on my friendships and made it quite difficult to balance social commitments, boyfriend and daily housekeeping. In addition, studying in a foreign language was an extra challenge to overcome. Luckily, I received loads of support and encouragement from my friends, family and from my program leader - Gordon Smith, which have always helped me to see the light at the end of the tunnel when sometimes I thought there was none. The course was definitely worth the money. It was well- taught and organised, all the necessary textbooks and academic publications were widely available in the library. In addition, Business School subsidised free daily copies of the Financial Times which made all my friends studying at different universities slightly jealous. I did not only gain knowledge and understanding of the business world, but also developed variety on non-academic skills. Interacting in multicultural student society helps you understand people around, familiarize with different cultures and broaden out horizons. For me, such experience is priceless.
With the student campus located right in the centre of Plymouth and picturesque surroundings, Plymouth grants a very unique student experience. There are always things to do and places to go that suits different people and personalities. I will never forget beautiful beaches where I had numerous barbecues in the summer, wild ponies in Dartmoor and noisy seagulls that were a perfect substitute for my alarm clock in the morning!Depending on the workload and different deadlines to meet, you have to be flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances. Working part time throughout the first and second year I never had an opportunity to schedule my day properly and always tried to fit in any university commitment into limited free time I had, having to often compromise on my social life. The level of effort you put into your studies increases every year and so does your commitment to it. I was more organised in the final year, which in the end helped to get a first! My day usually started around 8-9 am with big breakfast and news catch up to maintain awareness of current affairs the business world. I would then attend the lectures and either stay in the library for the rest of the day catching up with uni work/job applications/friends, or work from home. One of the great advantages of Plymouth campus is its close proximity to the city centre. Being a typical girl, I could never resist daily visits to Drake Circus. It did break up your day and helped to clear my mind. Such work/fun balance, however, changed when the Easter break started. In preparations for exams, library became my second home! Making full use of study rooms and quiet study areas, I would usually find a secluded corner to gather my thoughts, prepare revision notes and stay there until around 9-10 pm.
During my placement year I worked for Fujitsu-Siemens Computers in Bracknell. I joined the company as a Logistics Reporting Analyst and then moved into a central Reporting Analyst role. Working in reporting allowed me to gain exposure to different aspects of the business and get involved with various projects/initiatives throughout the company. I designed and developed new reporting tools, looked for processes improvements and performed various data analysis. As part of my role, I was an interface between Fujitsu and its biggest customers, negotiated terms with new suppliers and traced orders throughout the whole of the supply chain. Undertaking a year out in the industry was the best and the most beneficial part of my degree. I would definitely advise other students to consider such option when choosing a degree course. I now work for Royal Mail as an Operations Manager and will soon have my own team to manage. My job varies every single day and always surprises me with unexpected challenges. I joined the company at the difficult times when lots of changes are being implemented and lots of bad publicity generated. This adds extra challenge to my daily life and is a really good test of skills I developed throughout university. What has been more useful from my degree course are the operations modules lectured my Gordon Smith. Having a well rounded knowledge on the subject has really helped me shine in my role and allowed to take on extra responsibilities from early start of my career.
